The First Robotics Program is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to teach high school-aged young people engineering and teamwork skills while having a great time. The First Robotics Competition stages short games played by remote-controlled robots. The robots are designed and built in 6 weeks (out of a common set of basic parts) by a team of 10 to 25 high school-aged young people and a handful of engineers-mentors. The students also pilot the robots on the field.

The team meets once a month during the fall semester planning for the competition, learning design methodologies, establishing subsystem teams, learning teamwork skills and learning to program the robot controllers. The 2010 competition begins in January with an exciting “kick-off” event where the “game” for 2010 is revealed. We then have just 6 weeks to design-build-test a robot to compete in the games. All meetings and robot fabrication are held at the Leppke Farm in Midland, Virginia (about 3 miles out of Warrenton). The 6-week build season will require a significant commitment of time (Saturdays and some weekday evenings).

Every student, regardless of his or her expertise, can participate and benefit. There are critical roles for students in design and building, computer programming, website design, research, fundraising, public relations and marketing.

The cost to participate in the club is $100. That does not include travel expenses to the regional competition. We will also need corporate sponsorships to cover the costs of the kit of parts for the competition and the costs of entering the competition. Time commitments will include heavy involvement during January and February when the final designing, building, and programming takes place.
